Facebook App Makes Mardi Gras Float Riders Mini Celebrities

View Comments

If your from New Orleans, you’ve probably had this conversion with a friend before:

You: “Hey! Heard you were riding in the (Insert Parade Name Here).”

Friend: “Yep, I’ll be on float #10 on the drivers side.”

You: “Cool, I’ll be sure to look for you and call out your name.  Make sure you throw me something too!”

The story plays out with your friends throwing massive amounts of beads and other catches your way when you scream their name at the parade.  Taking this concept into the realm of social media, local web developers David Martin & Denny Juge created a Facebook app called My Krewe.

My Krewe lets you select the parade you and your friends are rolling in, the number of the float and what side you’ll be on to share with others.  You can also let non-Facebookers know as well by inputting their e-mail.  Mr. Juge says “Every year, your friends or friends of friends tell you who’s riding in a parade. We figured we’d just build an app to help facilitate that. We choose Facebook because the social networking component was already there and made it easy enough for anybody to use.”

The Facebook app also allows you to select a parade to see who’s rolling and print out a list of information.  The up side is that people feel like a celebrity for a second.  Your already riding in a float, strangers are doing whatever they can to get that Mardi Gras throw from you.  Who doesn’t want their name chanted by hundreds of strangers?

If your rolling this year or want to know who is, check out the My Krewe Facebook App to keep the “Throw Me Something Mister” tradition alive.
