It's the little things that makes New Orleans unlike any other city. Beignets at Cafe du Monde. St. Charles during Mardi Gras season. Local shops on Magazine St. These cultural gems are the things we hold dear, it's what makes new comers fall in love with our city, and a new local web show will look in all the crooks and crevasses of New Orleans that makes our city unique.
The Rex & Bella Show, created by local artist Rex Dingler and local Burlesque dancer Belle Blue will look at cultural adventures, talking to eccentric artists, and highlight some of the things that bring out the character of New Orleans. According to their website, "It’s an anti-travel show, encouraging folks who live here to dig deeper into the city’s cultures & subcultures, discovering new things to do, places to eat, and people to meet." The show will be a video web series, directed by producer extraordinaire Andrew Larimer. Their first show is slated to air on March 6th, 2010 and looks at Pete's Easy Pizza in the Upper 9th Ward. We recently caught up with Rex to ask him about the show and here's what he had to say:
What's the idea behind the project and why do it as a web show?
The idea of the show came about when Bella and I went to meet Andrew to promote the Dinglerization of America artshow that had her dancing and my artwork. Afterwards, we talked about how fun it would be to do a show that promoted aspects of local culture that wasn't always mainstream. We figured between the three of us, we circulated in enough circles to have plenty of cool things to shoot and share.
What is your goal with the web show?
The ultimate goal of the show? Hm... Well, I think the first goal is to have fun. The business goal is to make it self-sufficient, I'm sure Andrew would say. And then in the end, there's got to be something about World Domination. I'm not going to be happy until Bella and I have out a bed linen line next to Martha Stewart in K-Martbecause we're taking that bitch down.
What do you want people from New Orleans to get out of it?
As for what we hope New Orleansians get out of it... Well, I hope that they find out about some little nuance of their city they weren't already informed about. It's another one of those cultural identification things that make New Orleans so great. Imagine our city without things like Noise Coalition, speakeasies, and sordid underground parties. It's another way of saying...there just might be something more out there in this great big little city of ours...and we know how to share it with you.
