Invade NOLA Needs Your Help: Support Independent Media

With five issues already under their belt, Invade NOLA is looking to continue it's bi-weekly digital magazine that looks at the world from a different set of eyes.  Created by Justin Shiels and a set of talented writers, Invade NOLA discusses arts, sex, diversity, activism and growing up in a very honest way.  You can feel the passion in each writers column and relate to the subject matters on a personal level.  Now the magazine is asking for your support and when they say support, they mean money.

Mr. Shiels would like the digital magazine to continue to spur a new movement within the New Orleans creative industry.  “Lets be honest, most media for millennials is carbon copy reality TV, full of whiny obnoxious teens. We have to believe that the millennial generation has the power to change the world in a positive way, here in New Orleans there is a strong community of intelligent thinkers who challenge the status quo.” he says.  Citizen journalism has become an active part of local media in New Orleans. With sources such as Humid Beings (Community Commons and Publishing platform), IntheKnowla (Hyper Local User Generated Media), and The Lens (Investigative news and journalism from New Orleans);  Invade NOLA brings another media outlet to help breath new life into our culture by pushing creative boundaries and taking the news into other arenas.

In an arena littered with literary magazines and artistic publications, Invade NOLA looks to fill a void in local media by shining a light on our amazing youth culture.

Now Invade NOLA has setup a Kickstater page to raise $3,500 in funds.  The contributions will fund 5 months of weekly issues.  More specifically:

  • 70% will be used for the production of 5 months of bi-weekly magazine issues
  • 25% will be used for online and offline marketing to increase readership on the site
  • 5% goes back to Kickstarter

Already the magazine has garnished over 8,000 pageviews, 2,000 unique visits and reaches 40 out of 50 states in 27 counties.  To date, Invade NOLA has raised 56% or a little more than half of the funds it needs.  If your keeping count that's $1,952.  The deadline is April 10th and every little bit helps.  Supporters of the project say they believe in independent media "the little guy" to keep pushing out good content to the people that want it.

What Can You Do To Help

For one, you can visit http://www.invadenola.com to find out more about what they do and what they want to accomplish.  You can also visit their Kickstarter page and pledge $5, $35 or  $75.  Ms. Shiels hopes that the Kickstarter money will give the magazine enough momentum to raise readership, pay writers, and become self sustaining.  Pledge money, tell friends by world of mouth, or just talking it up can help support local independent media.

it's a shame that folk, not only in New Orleans, have trouble making money with hyperlocal news. asking for donations isn't a sustainable business model, imo.
