NOLA StreetUp Party: Foursquare Geeks Unite!
Check in here. Check in there. Gotta be my points and badges. Everybody seems to be going gaga over Foursquare these days. For those of you that are late to the party, Foursquare is an application that allows people to “check-in” from your phone at any location. Check-in to a local business, eatery, or venue in order to get points, special badges, and become mayor. Points are awarded whenever you check-in to the same place or add in a new venue. Badges are given away under certain criteria such as the Superstar badge, for checking into to 50 locations or JetSetter badge, whereby you must check-in to five different airports. Doing this enough times at one location gives the the prestigious mayor status. For socialites it gives them the ability to connect with friends that may be at the local watering hole or coffee shop. For businesses, it can be a marketing opportunity in the new wave of advertising tech tools.
Chris Johnston, Head of the Street team in New Orleans for Foursquare was asked to help expand this goal. “Businesses have the opportunity to promote specials through Foursquare. A user checks-in to their local deli and gets 15% off a sandwich. Or the mayor of the location may receive a free drink every time they check in. Local businesses can place a Foursquare sign in their window to also promote these deals which will increase their customers and the number of Foursquare users” says Mr. Johnston. So far a handful of businesses have taken up the Foursquare deal which is currently free. Take Squeal BBQ for example, a check-in will get you a free drink and two drinks if your the mayor. For local businesses to be apart of this campaign all they have to do is contact a member of the local street team, give them their information, and with 24 to 48 hours Foursquare can add the business information into their database.
The StreetUp Party, sponsored by Foursquare, on January 22nd highlights just this opportunity so more businesses can get involved and also allows New Orleans Foursquare players to meet face to face. It gives users a chance talk Foursquare geek talk and party with each other. Sources close to the party say there might be some special announcements in the form of new local badges and goodies for NOLA Foursquare players. If your a point grabbing, badge awarding, gotta make the leadership type of person then check out the StreetUp Party for your Foursquare fix.
