Lafayette’s OneWebDay: A Celebration Of The City’s Technology Advancements
On September 22nd 2009, people around the world will celebrate OneWebDay. A day that sparks public awareness about the Internet, the web, and how we can make advancements in technology within our community. OneWebDay also focuses on the digital divide that plagues areas without certain technology. This celebration has been going on for the past four years, and this year 50 cities in 20 countries will host festivities.
In Lafayette, LA organizers will bring awareness to many advancements that are currently happening in their technology community. According to Geoff Daily, Editor of App-Rising.com and the community organizer for this event, Lafayette wants to use their OneWebDay to highlight what’s going on in their city, motivate other cities to discuss their technology initiatives, and think about networking among different communities.
Lafayette’s Initiatives
Lafayette is currently in the middle of building the fastest residential fiber network, offering speeds of 50Mpbs symmetrical as well as a free 100Mpbs symmetrical intranet to all LUSFiber subscribers. The city also plays host to the Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise (LITE) center, which houses research equipment to build 3-D visualization models and also high performance computing research. The LITE center also has one of the world’s largest 3-D visualization theaters and one of the world’s first multi-user six sided digital 3-D space, based on CAVE ® technologies. Other plans are also in the works such as finding financial resources, identifying physical spaces for tech startups, and creating a city wide developers network whose focus is around building fiber centric applications.
